Ruby Tuesday
Here it is Ruby Tuesday again. Last Friday we went to a town about 40 miles from here, and there happened to be a bit of train activity going on. In this picture we show a switch stand. This switch stand is operated manually. The yellow handle enables the conductor to move it from one side to the other, in order for the train to move either to another track or onto a siding from the main line. When the engineer sees green he may proceed straight ahead, and when he sees red, he should proceed onto another track. With the slump in the economy it seems there has been a reduction in train traffic in our area at least.

They still use something so simple and manual as a switch?
I'm reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand now; lots in it about how train tracks are (were?) built.
Manual items become more and more antique these days which makes this an unique photo to me. Best wishes :)
Good to have a railroader explain these things! Great shot.
